Quantitative trait loci for bone traits segregating independently of those for growth in an F-2 broiler X layer cross
An F broiler-layer cross was phenotyped for 18 skeletal traits at 6, 7 and 9 weeks of age and genotyped with 120 microsatellite markers. Interval mapping identified 61 suggestive and significant QTL on 16 of the 25 linkage groups for 16 traits. Thirty-six additional QTL were identified when the assumption that QTL were fixed in the grandparent lines was relaxed. QTL with large effects on the lengths of the tarsometatarsus, tibia and femur, and the weights of the tibia and femur were identified on GGA4 between 217 and 249 cM. Six QTL for skeletal traits were identified that did not co-locate with genome wide significant QTL for body weight and two body weight QTL did not coincide with skeletal trait QTL. Significant evidence of imprinting was found in ten of the QTL and QTL x sex interactions were identified for 22 traits. Six alleles from the broiler line for weight- and size-related skeletal QTL were positive. Negative alleles for bone quality traits such as tibial dyschondroplasia, leg bowing and tibia twisting generally originated from the layer line suggesting that the allele inherited from the broiler is more protective than the allele originating from the layer
Euler-Heisenberg lagrangians and asymptotic analysis in 1+1 QED, part 1: Two-loop
We continue an effort to obtain information on the QED perturbation series at
high loop orders, and particularly on the issue of large cancellations inside
gauge invariant classes of graphs, using the example of the l - loop N - photon
amplitudes in the limit of large photons numbers and low photon energies. As
was previously shown, high-order information on these amplitudes can be
obtained from a nonperturbative formula, due to Affleck et al., for the
imaginary part of the QED effective lagrangian in a constant field. The
procedure uses Borel analysis and leads, under some plausible assumptions, to a
number of nontrivial predictions already at the three-loop level. Their direct
verification would require a calculation of this `Euler-Heisenberg lagrangian'
at three-loops, which seems presently out of reach. Motivated by previous work
by Dunne and Krasnansky on Euler-Heisenberg lagrangians in various dimensions,
in the present work we initiate a new line of attack on this problem by
deriving and proving the analogous predictions in the simpler setting of 1+1
dimensional QED. In the first part of this series, we obtain a generalization
of the formula of Affleck et al. to this case, and show that, for both Scalar
and Spinor QED, it correctly predicts the leading asymptotic behaviour of the

Drowning is an apparent and unexpected recurrent cause of mass mortality of Common starlings (Sturnus vulgaris
Drowning is infrequently reported as a cause of death of wild birds and such incidents typically involve individual, rather than multiple, birds. Over a 21-year period (1993 to 2013 inclusive), we investigated 12 incidents of mortality of multiple (2 − 80+) Common starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) in Great Britain that appeared to be due to drowning. More than ten birds were affected in ten of these reported incidents. These incidents always occurred during the spring and early summer months and usually involved juvenile birds. In all cases, circumstantial evidence and post-mortem examinations indicated drowning to be the most likely cause of death with no underlying disease found. A behavioural explanation seems likely, possibly related to the gregarious nature of this species combined with juvenile inexperience in identifying water hazards. A review of data from the ringed bird recovery scheme across Great Britain (1909–2013 inclusive) of both starlings and Common blackbirds (Turdus merula), also a common garden visitor, identified additional suspected drowning incidents, which were significantly more common in the former species, supporting a species predisposition to drowning. For each species there was a marked seasonal peak from April to August. Drowning should be included as a differential diagnosis when investigating incidents of multiple starling mortality, especially of juveniles

In this work we study mesonic excitations in a Quantum Field Theory dual to
the non Abelian T-dual of , using a D6 brane probe on the
Sfetsos-Thompson background. Before and after the duality, we observe
interesting differences between the spectra and interpret them. The spectrum of
masses and the interactions among mesonic excitations teach valuable lessons
about the character of non-Abelian T-duality and its implications for

Probabilistic fire spread forecast as a management tool in an operational setting
Background: An approach to predict fire growth in an operational setting, with the
potential to be used as a decision-support tool for fire management, is described and
evaluated. The operational use of fire behaviour models has mostly followed a deterministic
approach, however, the uncertainty associated with model predictions needs
to be quantified and included in wildfire planning and decision-making process during
fire suppression activities. We use FARSITE to simulate the growth of a large wildfire.
Probabilistic simulations of fire spread are performed, accounting for the uncertainty
of some model inputs and parameters. Deterministic simulations were performed for
comparison. We also assess the degree to which fire spread modelling and satellite
active fire data can be combined, to forecast fire spread during large wildfires events.
Results: Uncertainty was propagated through the FARSITE fire spread modelling system
by randomly defining 100 different combinations of the independent input variables
and parameters, and running the correspondent fire spread simulations in order
to produce fire spread probability maps. Simulations were initialized with the reported
ignition location and with satellite active fires. The probabilistic fire spread predictions
show great potential to be used as a fire management tool in an operational setting,
providing valuable information regarding the spatial–temporal distribution of burn
probabilities. The advantage of probabilistic over deterministic simulations is clear
when both are compared. Re-initializing simulations with satellite active fires did not
improve simulations as expected.
Conclusion: This information can be useful to anticipate the growth of wildfires
through the landscape with an associated probability of occurrence. The additional
information regarding when, where and with what probability the fire might be in the
next few hours can ultimately help minimize the negative environmental, social and

Alcohol consumption and sport: a cross-sectional study of alcohol management practices associated with at-risk alcohol consumption at community football clubs
BackgroundExcessive alcohol consumption is responsible for considerable harm from chronic disease and injury. Within most developed countries, members of sporting clubs participate in at-risk alcohol consumption at levels above that of communities generally. There has been limited research investigating the predictors of at-risk alcohol consumption in sporting settings, particularly at the non-elite level. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between the alcohol management practices and characteristics of community football clubs and at-risk alcohol consumption by club members.MethodsA cross sectional survey of community football club management representatives and members was conducted. Logistic regression analysis (adjusting for clustering by club) was used to determine the association between the alcohol management practices (including alcohol management policy, alcohol-related sponsorship, availability of low- and non-alcoholic drinks, and alcohol-related promotions, awards and prizes) and characteristics (football code, size and location) of sporting clubs and at-risk alcohol consumption by club members.ResultsMembers of clubs that served alcohol to intoxicated people [OR: 2.23 (95% CI: 1.26-3.93)], conducted ‘happy hour’ promotions [OR: 2.84 (95% CI: 1.84-4.38)] or provided alcohol-only awards and prizes [OR: 1.80 (95% CI: 1.16-2.80)] were at significantly greater odds of consuming alcohol at risky levels than members of clubs that did not have such alcohol management practices. At-risk alcohol consumption was also more likely among members of clubs with less than 150 players compared with larger clubs [OR:1.45 (95% CI: 1.02-2.05)] and amongst members of particular football codes.ConclusionsThe findings of this study suggest a need and opportunity for the implementation of alcohol harm reduction strategies targeting specific alcohol management practices at community football clubs.<br /
